handsFOLDED #2 // Art_Action // Hamburg, 2008
Hands are undisputedly the most important tools to humans. We need them for many everyday actions. They are tools in the fields of personal exchange and business, particularly in the trade-industry of merchandise and money.
Looking at the lines, the structure and the form of the hands one could see them as physical visiting cards from which one could read the aspects of identity, such as occupation, inclinations and existing life.
Using these criteria I photographed the hands of passersby in the streets of a German capital at a place where tourists and locals mix: at the entrance to the underground on Hamburg's City Hall square. 60 people entering and leaving the station participated in the project.
In my studio in Bremen, I developed in the second phase, photocopjects® from the photos. Using the technique of black and white photocopy and experimental paper folding, I worked out - according as to how I understood it - the specifics of the individual hands with their unique structures as identity characteristics.
The last phase of the project consisted of an urban_art_action in the Hamburg underground stations - Hudtwalker Street and Barmbek. All the participants of the project and passersby could take a glimpse over my shoulder while I was working.
Within 4 hours, 6 different paper-folding-objects were created from about 200 paper-foldings which I installed on advertising walls in the underground stations.
